Riding and Writing Potpourri

This Holiday season; I wish all of you the very best of health, happiness, many miles of riding smiles, a bit of prosperity; and hope that in these trying times you all can find many things in your life to be thankful for!

Speaking of trying times it`s been a difficult year for motorcyclists all over the country! With targeted stops only for motorcyclists, numerous noise ordinances, more anti-motorcycle legislation; it seems every time we turn around we`re getting hit, targeted and made out to look like the bad guys!

But speaking of bad guys, I can`t ever remember a time in my life span where legislators have been more counter-productive and have used anti-constituent actions against those who`ve voted for them! Without getting into major politics here, let`s just look at the "facts" with respect to motorcyclists funds.... FOR ONE INSTANCE!

In the past year alone we`ve seen our Safety Funds raided, and our monies stolen away from us in states that are strapped for cash; in a faulty attempt to budget balance.

Take for instance Ohio; Governor Ted Strickland was ready to scoff $800,000 from the State`s Motorcycle Safety and Education program; but thankfully was forced by bikers to desist. And that was above and beyond $750,000 they tried to rake in 2006!

In New Jersey, Governor Jon Corzine scalped a walloping $1,2 million from the NJ Motorcycle Safety Training program to make up for the state`s budget shortfall!

In Tennessee, their program saw $821,000 gobbled away; while the New York program lost $552,000! Remember when that headline hit the stands? In 2007 Illinois lost $297,900.

This isn`t chump change folks; this represents "big bucks" but more over, it represents OUR money, and an indeterminable pirating of monies LEGISLATED to Motorcycle Safety Education and Awareness!!

And closer to home, the MMA has reported that OUR Motorcycle Safety Fund, which was initially underfunded by $174,472 was recently raided of $12,157. This is on top of an additional $50,000 which has been appropriated for usage other than its intention. And that`s on top of another $186,269 of monies that you and I paid…. STOLEN from us. Where and when does it end? And more overly, why is it being allowed?

It seems that the new administration`s "bailout" program; bail out those who cannot balance a budget by stealing funds from plans that benefit citizens paid for by a small group of taxpayers at an additional premium cost to all taxpayers has trickled down from the top….. to the very states we call our home!

What`s worse, the administration doesn`t condone this sort of behavior! It`s expected!

Take a look at what the State shows for us:

Budget Reduction Explanation: Reduces spending that is not affordable given the current revenue estimate.

This reduces the fund over 60%, this fiscal year alone. And it doesn`t look as though any other special fund got hit! What`s so abominable about this appropriation is that OUR fund is FUNDED BY US! Not the rest of the over 6 million residents in the State. Just the some 182,000 or so of us in the State that register our motorcycles and pay into the fund!

And last I checked, M.G.L. Chapter 90, Section 34, Paragraph (i), states that "$2.00 from every annual motorcycle registration fee collected from the motorcyclist by the Registry of Motor Vehicles" are to be used "solely for the purpose of promoting and advancing motorcycle safety" & awareness. "

What`s worse, the monies get moved to the general fund to pay for who knows what? Somebody`s chauffeur, a no show salary, cocktail parties, somebody else`s greed? What?

Hello, are laws being broken here? Is a class action suit in order? Hell, why not? We bikers don`t take our rights being abused in any way, shape or form lying down! So don`t! Get up and do something about it! Get involved, write letters, copy in your Senators and Reps as well! Be proactive, don`t sit on your laurels waiting for others to act! ACT NOW!!

Please, please, please, take the time to join in the charge to reverse the absconding with our funds.

Recently the MASS RMV has been enjoined and is now under the auspices and control of the MASSDOT. Even their website address has changed; it`s now http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/rmv/

The newly formed MASSDOT, whose Secretary of Transportation is Jeffrey Mullan is responsible for this latest raid. Will you join the MMA and other concerned motorcyclists and voice your complaint to Mr. Mullan, Governor Deval Patrick, RMV Registrar Rachael Kaprielian, Senate President Therese Murray, and House Speaker Robert DeLeo?

Together, we believe our collective voices would be a force to be reckoned with. Be respectful in your communications but, above all, be heard!

If we do nothing; then nothing will be done to change this; and more riders will die, because there`s not enough funding to promote the safety education and awareness in the state. Yes, we can all take the motorcycle safety course to keep ourselves safe, but if drivers are not educated as to how to interact with motorcycles on Massachusetts roadways, then the numbers of accidents, injuries and fatalities will continue to climb!

Below is a breakout of motorcycle fatalities up to the end of August. Unfortunately, since this report was compiled, there`ve been several more fatalities to add to this list:

As soon as I get my hands on an updated list, I will share it with you and post in *bikerbits* as well.

Well, folks, there`s no switching gears this month; as this subject is grave enough to stay cruising in this gear! I beg you all to pick up phone and pen and voice your consternation about these constant raids against OUR funds! Let your voices be heard; that`s the only way these constant assaults against our monies will stop!

And so with this, this month, I will sign off with my motto, that some of you may be familiar with:

As I live each day, I will do my part
to make a difference, and touch one heart.
Everyday it will be my goal
to bring information and enlighten your soul.
Continuous news I`ll disseminate
with the hopes that you will participate
One life to lose, is one life too many
If we don`t fight for our rights
pretty soon there won`t be any!

Ride and Write On…. Make a difference, let your voice be heard!
